Fringe Natures #12: Welcome the Dark

Date: Friday, December 1, 2023 POSTPONED UNTIL THE NEW YEAR

Sorry, FEELed Friends! Due to personal circumstances, we are unable to put on our Dark-Welcoming Event in December this year! We look forward to welcoming you back to Woodhaven in 2024!

Time: 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm (come with the light and leave with the dark!)

Where: Woodhaven Ecocultural Centre

A spooky view of two wood cabin style buildings, in the semi-darkness. Large cedar silhouettes loom behind. A video projection illuminates the front wall of one cabin.

What:  Days are getting shorter and the temperatures are dropping, which means it is time to… embrace the change of season! The FEELed Lab invites you to gather around the fire as we tenderly welcome the dark, together.

This year we will take inspiration from a recent guide to an exhibition at a Natural History museum. While we encourage you to think creative and critically about science and natural history’s descriptions of other species (we highly recommend Alexis Pauline Gumbs’ book Undrowned in this respect!), we were also intrigued by this description of DARKNESS:

“To humans, accustomed to daylight, the darkness can be dangerous and frightening. But many creatures are at home in the dark, whether they are nocturnal, live deep underground, or in the depths of the ocean. With heightened and completely different senses to our own, these animals have adapted to flourish in the dark.”

In response to this, we will invite you to imagine yourself with and alongside creatures of the dark… we will have materials on hand to assist with these transformations!

What to bring:

(1) Bring your own mug for a hot drink!

(2) Come dressed for the cold! Indoor spaces will also be available.

(3) Bring your wild and weird imaginings and/or knowledge of creatures that thrive in the dark and

(4) following our much-loved tradition in our first “Alongside the Dark” fringe natures gathering, we invite you to please come with an offering (a quote, a poem, a recollection, a song) to the dark to share. We will share these offerings around the fire!

Fringe Natures is an occasional outdoor event series hosted by the FEELed Lab. These events invite deep curiosity about who, and where, we are, and what the heck we are doing here. All FEELed Lab events strive to be feminist, anticolonial, queer, and accessible spaces! As we move toward increasing the accessibility of all our events, please let us know if there’s anything we can do to accommodate your specific needs.
